Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
