This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the youth anxious. When Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor portrays the greedy Jim, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye with compassion. October 14th, early morning, Film4
